The Work of the Righteous A month ago,
Gush Shalom started a campaign to mark the Green Line on all the roads
leading from Israel into the occupied territories. This week Avigdor
Kahalani, the Minister for Internal Security, announced that the police will
mark the Green Line by erecting a system of fences and trenches.
As the Hebrew saying goes:
The work of the righteous is done by others.
Kahalani says that this is not a political decision, but only a
means of preventing theft. The occupation regime, which does not only take
away drinking water from the Palestinian population, but also any
possibility of earning a honest living, causes Palestinians to cooperate
with Israeli criminals, cross the Green Line and steal cars and other
property.
It goes without saying that fences and trenches will not stop stealing
in these circumstances.
We have a much more practical suggestion: Turn the Green Line into a
border of peace between the State of Israel and the State of Palestine,
and let the Palestinian police guard it: Instead of Israeli-Palestinian
cooperation between thieves, Israeli-Palestinian cooperation for
law-enforcement.
