Middle East Group
(Nahostgruppe)
The Middle East Group began in Berlin ten years ago (in
1989).
Founded by Alisa Fuss - President
of the International League for Human Rights, Berlin - the Group is made up
of Jewish / Israeli members, Palestinian and Arabs from other Arab
countries, interested non-Jewish Germans and, since last year, Sudanese. We
are concerned with information on the whole of the Middle East, but with a
special emphasis on the Israeli-Palestinian problem, and the Sudan.
Important for us is, however, not only the collection of information by
qualified lecturers, but also the relationship within the group -
understanding for each other’s point of view, easing of tension, and mutual
"support". We are very critical of Israeli policies and try to help
Palestinians as much as possible - Public relations, letters to the press,
public conferences, etc.
Alisa Fuss unfortunately died in 1998: the group is now lead by Ismail
Al Baz, Ruth Fruchtman and Norbert Mattes. We meet once a month in the
Heinrich Boell Foundation, Rosenthaler Strasse, Berlin. Visitors and guests
are welcome. (R. Fruchtman)
