Spätere Anmerkung - vom 13-07-04 - Der hier geschilderte
Überfall auf eine 23-Jährige Mutter in einem Pariser Vorortzug (RER) war
frei erfunden. Die Frau und ihr Lebensgefährte wurden am Nachmittag wegen
Vortäuschens einer Straftat in Polizeigewahrsam genommen, nachdem die Frau alles
gestanden hatte. Die Schilderungen der Frau hatten in Frankreich
Entsetzen ausgelöst.

Genug mit dem Antisemitismus in Frankreich
11-07-04 Sechs Jugendliche arabischer Abstammung griffen in
einem Pariser Vorortzug eine junge Mutter mit ihrem Kind an. Keiner der übrigen
Fahrgäste griff ein, als die Angreifer das Kleid der 23-Jährigen, die sie für
eine Jüdin hielten, zerfetzten, ihr die Haare abschnitten und ihr mit
Filzstiften Hakenkreuze auf den Bauch zeichneten. Den Kinderwagen in dem das
Kind lag warfen sie um.
Frankreichs Präsident Jacques Chirac äußerte sich entsetzt.
Eine aktuelle Statistik weist für das erste Halbjahr 2004 mit über 500 Taten
mehr antisemitische und rassistische Angriffe nach als für das gesamte Jahr
2003. In Le Chambon -sur-Lignon, jenem Dorf, das während des Holocaust Juden
Unterschlupf gewährte, rief der französische Präsident vor wenigen Tagen dazu
auf, gegen den Hass zu kämpfen. Seine Ansprache
wurde im französischen Fernsehen übertragen. “Der Antisemitismus und der
Rassismus bedrohen die Einheit des französischen Volkes. Ich glaube an ein
offenes und vielfältiges Frankreich, das eine Vision von Gerechtigkeit und
Frieden nach Europa und in die ganze Welt trägt“.
Le Chambon-sur-Lignon findet sich auf der Gedenktafel der
Allee der Gerechten der Völker der Welt. Roger Cukierman, Präsident des CRIF,
Vertreter der Juden Frankreichs, äußerte sich der israelischen Tageszeitung
M'ariw gegenüber sehr erfreut, über Chiracs Entscheidung, gerade hier zu
sprechen: "Das ist ein starkes Symbol".

Le Chambon -sur-Lignon is a Protestant village in Haute-Loire
in southern France. During World War II, it became a haven for Jews fleeing from
the Nazis and their French collaborators.
The Chambonais hid Jews in their homes,
sometimes for as long as four years, provided them with forged I.D. and ration
cards, and helped them over the border to safety in Switzerland. With their
history of persecution as a religious minority in Catholic France, empathy for
Jews as the people of the Old Testament, and the powerful leadership and example
of their pastor and his wife, Andre and Magda Trocme, the people of Chambon
acted on their conviction that it was their duty to help their "neighbors" in
need.

The Chambonais rejected any labeling of
their behavior as heroic. They said: "Things had to be done and we happened to
be there to do them. It was the most natural thing in the world to help these
people." After the round- up and deportation of Jews in Paris in July 1942,
Pastor Trocme had delivered a sermon to his parishioners, "The Christian Church
should drop to its knees and beg pardon of God for its present incapacity and
cowardice."
The American Friends (Quakers) and other
Protestant organizations provided assistance to Chambon to set up homes for
children whose parents had been deported. The head of one of these homes was
Daniel Trocme, the young cousin of Pastor Trocme. In June 1943 he and "his"
children were arrested and deported to the East. Daniel Trocme died in Majdanek.
 The
Trocmes have been recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous among the Nations; a
tree was planted in honor of Andre and Magda Trocme and another in honor of
Daniel Trocme. As seen in the picture, a small garden and plaque on the
grounds of Yad Vashem were dedicated to the people of Chambon.
Documentary filmmaker Pierre Sauvage, a child survivor of the
Holocaust and a child of Holocaust survivors (at right in the arms of Eva
Héritier of Le Chambon), is an Emmy Award-winning independent producer. He
founded the
Chambon Foundation
(formerly Friends of Le Chambon) in 1982; it is a nonprofit educational
foundation committed to exploring and communicating the necessary and
challenging lessons of hope intertwined with the Holocaust’s unavoidable
lessons of despair.
 Sauvage
(at left in 1990 with Le Chambon righteous Marie Brottes and Henri Héritier)
is best known for his 1989 feature documentary Weapons of the Spirit,
which tells the story of a mountain community in France that defied the
Nazis and took in and saved five thousand Jews, including Sauvage and his
parents.

Sur l'escarpement oriental du Massif Central, entre les Vallées
de la Loire et du Rhône, le village du Chambon-sur-Lignon est situé sur un
plateau d'altitude moyenne de 1000 mètres. A l'ouest, il est bordé par les sucs
volcaniques et boisés du Lizieux à l'yssingelais.
