Mrs. Ruth Cohen und Rabbi Uri Regev:
Trauer um Paul Spiegel
It is with deep sadness that the World Union for
Progressive Judaism learnt of the death of Dr. Paul Spiegel at just 68 years
of age and following a prolonged illness. Dr. Spiegel will be sorely missed
in his role as President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany
(Zentralrat) as well as a unique voice of morality and unification.
Dr. Spiegel’s vision of cohesion and his valiant, groundbreaking efforts on
behalf of the diverse communities of Jews in Germany led to reconciliation
amongst many.
Mrs. Ruth Cohen, past President of the WUPJ and Rabbi Uri Regev, then
Executive Director of the WUPJ who met with Dr. Spiegel in 2005 wish to
convey their personal condolences to Dr. Spiegel’s wife and daughters, to
the members of the Zentralrat and to the community in Duesseldorf. They
express their sorrow that Dr. Spiegel will not be there in person to witness
the fruits of his labors which have to date resulted in the inclusion of
Liberal Jewish congregations in the Zentralrat.
The Chairman of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, Mr. Steven M.
Bauman pays tribute to Dr. Paul Spiegel as a holocaust survivor, as a
political correspondent and as President of the Central Council of Jews, as
a man who made his strong moral voice heard as he criticized violence and
condemned antisemitism while encouraging tolerance and the acceptance of
others.
