Jewish Life in Russia:
The Jewish Community in Kazan
Kazan is a city on the Volga, 800 kilometers
from Moscow. The Jewish community in Kazan dates back to 1996. Of the 1.2
million inhabitants of the city, approximately 10,000 are Jewish. The people
lack religious and cultural cohesion, having grown up in the atheistic
Soviet Union. In 1997 our community got back the old synagogue building,
which during the Soviet period was used as a "House of study." Finally, the
community has a home that now can be set aside as the center of Jewish life
in Kazan.

So far, the community has achieved a good deal.
We now have a Jewish junior high school, a kindergarten, a seniors' club, a
library, a music and dance ensemble, and much, much more. Regular religious
services and activities in all areas of Jewish life are held. The community
seeks to give people back their religion, their culture, and their
tradition.Social work also plays an important role in the community. We have
a number of social projects that need help. We seek in difficult situations
to stand by and provide both financial and spiritual support.
Our community is one of the most advanced in Russia. Many
projects we introduced were later carried out in other communities in
Russia. We are making an effort to persuade people to return to their
tradition and culture. This is why for many the community has become a
second home.
We also have many plans for a larger kindergarten, an old
people's home, a free canteen for those in need and much more. It is very
important for us to use every means to revive Jewish culture in Russia. We
seek like-minded people throughout the world for whom Jewish revival is not
an indifferent matter. We are convinced that only together can we protect
and transmit our traditions, history, and culture.
We are always open to new contacts. We would like to work
together with communities from Europe. We are happy to make new friends and
acquaintances, and have new experiences.
If you are interested in getting in touch with us,
working together or simply for exchange, please write us.
Warm greetings,
The Jewish Community in Kazan
