THE ARIEH MERZER COPPER GREETING CARD COLLECTION

My grandfather, the late Jewish artist Arieh Merzer, was born in Poland in 1905, and was one of the revivers of the ancient Jewish art of copper relief. He lived and worked in Warsaw, Paris, Geneva and Safed, where he arrived in 1945 after gaining international acciaim as a Jewish artist.

"Chagall, the Russian Jew, you, the Polish Jew, and I, the Romanian Jew each in his own manner, demonstrates that despite the many generations which have elapsed, we have never betrayed the Biblical heritage which lies at the very core of every Jew." (Itzik Manger in a letter to Merzer.)

Using the most advanced printing techniques available, I designed and adapted my grandfather's copper reliefs to be printed on paper. I have added quotations from the worid of the Torah, the Kabbala and Hasidism, for this is the world into which Arieh Merzer was born, the one which nurtured him and was the source of his artistic inspiration. This is the world, as Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote him in a letter, that, after the Holocaust, "...you vowed to immortalize in copper."

I would like to thank all the wonderful people - collectors and museum curators and directors from all over the worid - who contributed to the success of this project.

This collection is the lifelong artistic endeavor of Arieh Merzer.

Sincerely yours,
Aviv Livnat
