What
is haGalil onLine?
haGalil onLine shall be an
open book...
We created haGalil
onLine for Jews and people, who are interested in Judaism (Judentum -
Jahaduth).
Our
objective is to provide a forum for the great variety of possibilities to
look at life from a Jewish perspective, and we would like to invite you to
participate and share your own opinions.
Judaism is about
learning. Learning with a Jewish heart offers a feeling for the idea
that G-d granted us life - and the whole world - as a great gift gift to
love and cherish. Judaism means an acceptance of our responsibility for
this world - in all its variety - and to nourish and heal it for
ourselves and all those who will come after us. The ultimate aim is to
bring the world back - back to G-d. Back to paradise.
You may start your
visit here and scroll where your heart leads you. haGalil onLine will
bring you to Israel and to centers of Jewish life in Europe, America,
and the rest of the world. You'll find traces of the 'Golden Age of
Tolerance' in the early Middle Ages of Spain, and paradoxes of Jewish
existence in Germany today.
Jewish life in Germany
thrives mostly away from the public eye. In larger communities it is
shielded by high security. Fears are many and they are often justified.
However, the extent and the consequences of these fears are often locked
in the unconscious. Many Jews have learned not to touch or expose their
wounds and hide their true feelings. Painful memories solidify in
symbolism, politeness and public obligation. We believe the dialogue
with our non-Jewish fellow citizens should be moderate, understanding
and careful. Impressions have sometimes become more potent than reality.
Our children are growing up - Baruch Hashem - and we are already
wondering what the 4th Generation Syndrome might look like.
What kind of Judaism will our
children find? Will it resemble a folklore club? An Israel fan club? A
dogmatic, fundamentalist right-wing clan? Or will the young generation
find open hearts and minds when searching for their roots and the
answers to questions about G-d and the world? Will their parents be
willing and able to discuss questions with them about the Jewish
religion and Jewish identity, Judaism's purpose and goals? Will they
find Ahawath Yisrael
(openhearded love) or Sinath hinam (narrowminded hatred)?
Judaism is a joy. It is a path to
happiness, to the world and to humanity. Its central values are love,
liberty and the sanctity of life.Vitality (lebedich) is a core value:it
thrives on freedom - and freedom for all humans is a demand, resulting
from the concept of "Love your Neighbour as you love yourself."
What may seem complex is really
very:
''... it is not hidden and it is not far from you.
It is not in heaven, that you may say, who goes up for us into the
heavens and gets it to us and makes it known to us that we may do
it.
And it is not beyond the sea that you would have to say, who travels
for us to the other end of the sea, to get it, make it known to us
so that we can do it,
it is very close to You
- in your mouth and in your heart - do it!''
(V. Book of Moses, haDewarim 30.11ff)
We also want to document that Judaism can and
continues to be present here in Germany. Not even the ruthlessness of the
National Socialists (Nazis) and their supporters succeeded in destroying the
great tradition of Judaism in Germany.
Nevertheless, the destruction
is immeasurable and our grief is endless.
Judaism is the oldest of the
existing religions in Germany. Two thousand years before us Jews in this
country prayed to the one and only G-d. His benediction shall be upon
us, upon klal-Yisrael and upon the whole world.
