Third
Home Demolition: The Case Al-Atrash
The Al-Atrash family has
lost their home on the outskirts of Hebron for the third time today. Israeli
soldiers tore down what ever the family has managed to build During the last
three weeks, since the 3/3/98, when their home was Demolished. On that day
Israeli Soldiers dragged the family from their home, giving them 1 hour to
evacuate their belongings. This, of course could not be done, and the house
was torn down, burying toys, clothes and furniture under the ruins. During
the weeks since, the Family has tried to rebuild - aided by the Christian
Peace Team and some Israeli peace activists.
During this time, soldiers -
Accompanied by 60 settlers harassed the builders, threatening them,
Confiscating tools, etc. Today, the soldiers dragged the Mother, Zuhur,
from her home with such brutality, that she was hospitalized with a broken
arm. The Father - Yussuf, his 18 year old son - Hussam and the 17 year old
Daughter - Manal, where arrested, leaving 8 young children alone in a
tent.
Since 1988, the Al-Atrash family is
trying to build a home. Although they own a plot of land, 26 Dunams, they
are denied a building permit for the last ten years. This is part of the
Israeli policy of confining Palestinian villages, surrounding them with
settlements and suffocating them economically.
Denied the most basic need of life, the
Al-Atrash family built their home with no permit. The first demolition
followed suite. In 1992 their home was demolished for the first time. They
saved penny to penny, crowded in the homes of the extended family, till
they finished building for the second time. Their happiness lasted till
the Third of March 1998.
We wish to ask the Netanyahu Government
this: Where should the Al-Atrash family live? Because in contrast to your
deepest wishes, they will not vanish into Thin air.
During the next few days, we will try
to provide more information, Including photographs of the home. We also
plan to have a demonstration on Wednesday March 25 in protest against this
brutal Israeli policy. This demonstration will be carried out with the
Christian Peace Team and the Committee against Home Demolition and other
Peace activists, opposite the Hotel of Mr. Kofi Annan, now visiting
Israel.
Please visit our site for updates. Any
support and offers of aid will be most welcome.
