Yerushalayim - Jerusalem 20. Juni

Von Sari am Freitag, den 26. Mai, 2000 - 20:32:

JERUSALEM DAY CELEBRATIONS
NEW GATE (OPPOSITE THE MUNICIPALITY) from 16:00-20:00 on Wednesday the 31st.
This family event will include food music, children's activities, human rights exhibits, and a chance for Israeli and Palestinian families to mingle. Speakers will include Shulamit Aloni, Faisal Husseini, Leah Shakdiel, Naim Ashab, Leah Tzemel and a representative of the Akel family (whose home Hebrew U wishes to demolish.)
Organizations include RHR, Betzelem, HaMoked, DCI-Israel, Public Committee against Torture, ICAHD, B'Mkom, Kol HaIsha, Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights, LAW, Palestinian Youth, etc.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FROM 15:00 ON.

The event is based on the following common statement, due to be published in Haaretz:
JERUSALEM: A CITY OF TWO PEOPLES
HUMAN RIGHTS AND JUSTICE FOR ALL JERUSALEMITES
WEDNESDAY, MAY 31ST, 16:00 - 20:00

We, the people of Jerusalem, Israelis and Palestinians have a shared vision of a city of peace and justice. "Jerusalem Day" too often commemorates the imposition of one people's will upon another. The "unification of Jerusalem" has also meant sustained occupation and led to serious violations of Palestinian human rights, including home demolitions, ID card confiscations, denial of health care, land expropriations, discrimination in housing and the providing of municipal services, closures and other elements of the "silent transfer" of Palestinians from Jerusalem.
We represent diverse opinions regarding the final status of Jerusalem. We are united in our conviction that both peoples' rights must be respected now and in any final status solution, and that no side has the right to impose a solution on the other.
Noting that June 1st is both Jerusalem Day and International Children's Day, we invite all those who share the vision of a better future for our children to attend our Jerusalem Day "Happening" the previous day.

Von DanSharon am Samstag, den 3. Juni, 2000 - 08:23:

Juni, 2000 - 22:04:

In the past weeks two Palestinian houses have been demolished in the Jerusalem area, both at the initiative of the Interior Ministry. (Nathan Sharansky who from time to time likes to show off as The Big Liberal, is simultaneously waging a war against Palestinian homes).

- June 13th,, a house was demolished in Jabel Mukabar. The house belonged to an Arab family which was fighting for years for a right to rebuild their crumbling old house, and to make it legal.
- June 5, a house in Walaje, south of Jerusalem - demolished with the help of some forty jeeps full of soldiers. The crime of the Halifa family: their wish to have decent housing in their village, on their own land.

On TUESDAY, June 20, 18:00 Gush Shalom will join the protest demonstration called for by our Jerusalem-based friends of Bat Shalom and ICAHD. The location: in front of Mr. Sharansky's own home, on Rehov Beit HaEshel in Old Katamon.

You are also requested to send your protest e-mails or faxes to Minister of Interior Natan Sharansky sar@moin.gov.il, fax: 02-5666376

cc: Prime Minister Ehud Barak: e-mail pm@pmo.gov.il
fax 972-2-566-4838
cc: US Secretary of State Madeline Albright e-mail \mail secretary@state.gov,secretary@state.gov},
fax 1-202-736-4461

You may compose your own letter or use Bat Shalom's example:

Dear Minister of Interior Sharansky,

You are requested to stop the racist and inhuman policies of Palestinian house demolitions in the Jerusalem area. These policies are a disgrace to the State of Israel, and to you personally.

Years ago, world public opinion rallied behind you to secure your release from the KGB jail. At that time, YOU protested against the racist policies of the Soviet government implemented against you, a Russian Jew. Now you became the initiator of state sanctioned demolition of Palestinian homes. YOU, "the hero of our times" who, as a young and healthy man so bitterly complained when the KGB confined you to a punishment cell where "the temperature was almost always below 18 degrees C", do not hesitate to send out entire Palestinian families with little babies, children and women into the open air of Jerusalem.

There are no geographic and ethnic borders to human suffering. So please do not try and tell us that you are only maintaining law and order. Let us refer you to page 154 of your own memoirs - this is exactly what your KGB interrogator tried to tell you. And do not tell us that we are interfering with internal affairs of a foreign state. This is exactly what international activists on your behalf were told by the Soviets. Stop the Palestinian house demolitions now.
