As members of the Jewish faith here in America and around the world gather to celebrate the High Holidays, I want to extend my warmest wishes for this New Year. L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevu – may you have a good year, and may you be inscribed for blessing in the Book of Life.
Rosh Hashanah marks the start of a new year – a time of humble prayer, joyful celebration, and hope for a new beginning. Ten days later, Yom Kippur stands as a day of reflection and repentance. And this sacred time provides not just an opportunity for individual renewal and reconciliation, but for families, communities and even nations to heal old divisions, seek new understandings, and come together to build a better world for our children and grandchildren.

At the dawn of this New Year, let us rededicate ourselves to that work. Let us reject the impulse to harden ourselves to others’ suffering, and instead make a habit of empathy – of recognizing ourselves in each other and extending our compassion to those in need.
Let us resist prejudice, intolerance, and indifference in whatever forms they may take — let us stand up strongly to the scourge of anti-Semitism, which is still prevalent in far too many corners of our world.
Let us work to extend the rights and freedoms so many of us enjoy to all the world’s citizens – to speak and worship freely; to live free from violence and oppression; to make of our lives what we will.
And let us work to achieve lasting peace and security for the state of Israel, so that the Jewish state is fully accepted by its neighbors, and its children can live their dreams free from fear. That is why my Administration is actively pursuing the lasting peace that has eluded Israel and its Arab neighbors for so long.
Throughout history, the Jewish people have been, in the words of the Prophet Isaiah, “a light unto the nations.” Through an abiding commitment to faith, family, and justice, Jews have overcome extraordinary adversity, holding fast to the hope of a better tomorrow.
In this season of renewal, we celebrate that spirit; we honor a great and ancient faith; and we rededicate ourselves to the work of repairing this world.
Michelle and I wish all who celebrate Rosh Hashanah a healthy, peaceful and sweet New Year.
נאום הנשיא לרגל ראש השנה
בימים אלה, בהם בני הדת היהודית באמריקה וברחבי העולם מציינים יחדיו את הימים הנוראים, ברצוני לשלוח את ברכותי החמות לשנה חדשה זו. לשנה טובה תיכתבו –
מי יתן ותהיה לכם שנה טובה, מי יתן ותיכתבו לברכה בספר החיים.
ראש השנה הוא תחילתה של שנה חדשה – זמן של תפילה ענווה, חגיגה , ותקווה להתחלה חדשה. עשרה ימים לאחר מכן, יום כיפור הוא יום של הרהורים וחרטה.
ומועד קודש זה מספק לא רק הזדמנות להתחדשות והתפייסות בין אדם לבין עצמו, אלא גם הזדמנות למשפחות, לקהילות ואפילו לאומות ליישב מחלוקות עתיקות-יומין, לחפש הבנות חדשות, ולהתאחד כדי לבנות עולם טוב יותר עבור ילדינו ונכדינו.
בפרוס עלינו שנה חדשה זו, הבה נקדיש את עצמנו מחדש למשימה זו. הבה נתגבר על הדחף להקשות את ליבנו לנוכח סבלם של אחרים, ותחת זאת נגלה אהדה – נזהה את עצמנו זה בפניו של זה וננהג חמלה כלפי הנצרכים.
הבה נתצייב לנגד דיעות קדומות, חוסר סובלנות, ואדישות בכל צורה שהיא – הבה נעמוד איתן לנגד פורענות האנטישמיות, שעדיין נפוצה ביותר מדי מקומות בכל קצוות תבל.
הבה נעמול כדי להעניק לכל אזרחי העולם את אותן זכויות וחירויות שכה רבים מאיתנו נהנים מהן – להתבטא בחופשיות ולקיים את מצוות הדת בחופשיות; לחיות חיים נטולי אלימות ודיכוי; לעשות בחיינו ככל שנתאווה.
והבה נעמול על מנת להשיג שלום בר-קיימא וביטחון למדינת ישראל, כדי שהמדינה היהודית תתקבל קבלה מוחלטת על ידי כל שכנותיה, ובניה יוכלו להגשים את חלומותיהם ללא פחד. זו הסיבה שהממשל בראשותי שואף להשיג את אותו שלום בר-קיימא החומק ישראל ומשכניה הערביים זמן כה רב.
לאורך ההיסטוריה, העם היהודי היה כדברי הנביא ישעיה, „אור לגויים“. בזכות מחוייבות לאמונה, למשפחה, ולצדק, התגברו יהודים על קשיים בלתי-רגילים, כשאחיזתם אינה מרפה מן התקווה למחר טוב יותר.
בימים אלה של התחדשות, אנו חוגגים רוח זו; אנו חולקים כבוד לדת גדולה ועתיקה; ואנו מקדישים עצמנו מחדש לעבודת תיקון העולם הזה.
מישל ואני מאחלים לכל אלה החוגגים את ראש השנה שנת בריאות, שנת שלום, שנה טובה ומתוקה.

„Liebe Mitglieder der jüdischen Gemeinden in Deutschland, zum jüdischen Neujahrsfest grüße ich Sie alle, auch im Namen meiner Frau, und wünsche Ihnen mit dem traditionellen Gruß ‚Shana tova!‘ ein gutes Jahr 5770 und schöne Feiertage.
Wir können im zurückliegenden Jahr auf ein gemeinsames Fest zurückblicken. Der Deutsche Koordinierungsrat der Gesellschaften für christlich-jüdische Zusammenarbeit hat sein 60-jähriges Bestehen gefeiert. Er ist so alt wie die Bundesrepublik. Mittlerweile hat die christlich-jüdische Zusammenarbeit in unserem Land einen festen Boden und Bestand. Das ist auch den vielen ausgestreckten Händen aus der jüdischen Gemeinschaft zu verdanken.
Ich freue mich, dass das jüdische Leben in Deutschland mehr als 60 Jahre nach dem Zivilisationsbruch der Shoah in vielen Bereichen unseres Landes wieder aufblüht und feste Wurzeln hat. In Köln kann die Synagogengemeinde ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen feiern und steht für Kontinuität und Vertrauen. In Erfurt wird die Alte Synagoge als Museum wieder eröffnet. In München werden Schülerinnen und Schüler in der Jüdischen Schule mit den Wurzeln ihres Glaubens vertraut gemacht und in Heidelberg öffnet in diesen Tagen der Neubau der Hochschule für Jüdische Studien seine Türen. Das sind nur wenige Beispiele, die zeigen, dass die jüdische Gemeinschaft in Deutschland zu Hause ist und unsere Kultur in vielen Bereichen mitprägt. Darüber können wir uns alle nur freuen.
Der Beginn eines neuen Jahres ist für viele aber auch mit persönlichen Wünschen, Fragen und auch Sorgen verbunden: Was wird die Zukunft bringen? Wie werden unsere Kinder und Enkel leben? Was können wir den nachfolgenden Generationen mitgeben? Ich wünsche Ihnen allen, dass das neue Jahr für Sie Gutes und Erfüllendes bereithält. Mit dem traditionell-jüdischen Neujahrsgruß ist auch der Wunsch verbunden, dass das Jahr ‚ein süßes Jahr‘ werde.
Das wünsche ich Ihnen und sage deshalb noch einmal von Herzen: ‚Shana tova umetuka 5770!‘ „
